If you want people to adopt new behaviours, remember this: stepping outside their comfort zone feels dangerous. Out there be dragons and other scary things.
So instead of pushing people into unknown territory, sneak the new behaviour into their comfort zone. Break it down. Adapt it. Pull in just a small piece that feels safe and doable.
For example, you want managers to give regular feedback. To many, a ‘formal feedback conversation’ feels scary.
But asking them to spot one thing someone did well today and say it out loud in the moment? That’s simple and safe. Do that enough times, and formal feedback no longer feels like dragon country.
Think of one behaviour you’d like your people to try.
How could you make the first step so easy it feels comfortably familiar?
