There is a certain irony in running a workshop on learning transfer and then watching very little happen to transfer the learning from it.
And yes, it has happened to me more than once.
I can run a brilliant workshop. Everyone can enjoy it, learn lots and go away full of good intentions.
But if nothing happens afterwards, so what?
Suppose your workshop is brilliant.
What would still need to happen afterwards for your workshop to work?
That’s a rather different question.
And the answer will probably include things that happen well outside your workshop.
You may not control them, but what can you do to influence them?
What conversations do you need to have with your customer? What could they do differently? What could you do to help? What needs to be agreed before the workshop rather than discovered afterwards?
You won’t always get everything you want.
But at least you are playing the bigger game.
Because your customer doesn’t really need a brilliant workshop.
They need whatever made the workshop worth doing in the first place.
The bigger game beyond simply delivering great training is also one of the themes running through the Business of Training Conference 2026 in London on 15 October.
I’ll be there, along with some excellent speakers and plenty of opportunity for discussion and networking. I’ll also be helping out with one of the roundtable discussions during the afternoon.
